Personal project: Thank you card
Here are some in-process photos of a card I recently created for a friend.
Gems fabric in the dining room
Recently, I received an email asking about Haiku in a Prism, one of the Gems pattern colorways I offer on Spoonflower (a digital fabric printing website).
Sketching gates
First round of pencil sketches.
New pattern: Ogee Garden
Returning to this awkwardly-named, but endlessly-intriguing motif, I filled a few more pages in a sketchbook and decided to pursue a loosely drawn “garden”.
Pattern archetypes: an elegant onion
I find it half fascinating, half maddening. It can be bulbous and comical or elegant and mysteriously harmonious. Its leaf-like form and the fascinating ways it can tightly repeat make it seem archetypal. One site’s onion is another site’s paisley, ogee or persian pickle, and the meanings of all those terms overlap and blur.
3D printing with chocolate
piq Chocolates is a startup that is among a few 3D thinkers developing viable ways to offer edible, 3D printed chocolates as gifts and promotional items.
New: Subtle Backgrounds on Creative Market
Most of the time (but not all of the time), a website background should stay in the background. It should provide just enough color, just enough interest and style, and set the stage for your foreground content to do the talking.
We recently visited the historic Adamson House, home of the family that at one time owned the town of Malibu (plus a bit of the nearby Santa Monica Mountains). I don’t need to be convinced to head up that way, it’s so invigorating just to spend time between the low, mist-watered hills and the cool sea.

I had posted a couple of these geometrics to Facebook and got requests for more colorways… so here they all are.
Pattern collection for home goods: Still Winter Woods
This pattern collection is inspired by the intriguing beauty of the colors in a snowflake pattern I created last winter. The coordinated set is now available for purchase on Spoonflower and continues to tell the story of a still and quiet winter wood. The palette is simple (and was developed spontaneously). Maybe that’s why it works so well across so many uses.
New patterns releasing for sale next week (4/23/13)
Look for new patterns and pattern colorways, scheduled for release about April 23. They’ll be available as fabric, wallpaper, wall decals, and giftwrap, too.
New Downloadable Vector Pattern: Floral Interlock
Just added to my shop on Creative Market, this new pattern tile was sparked by a 17th century Dutch motif.
The inspiration was a beautiful Dutch reproduction…
This Fabric has a Story • This Story has a Fabric
I’ve been looking for ways add dimension to this pattern design, which I showcased in a previous post. It’s the kind of design that really needs to be lived with and considered over time. Tiny photo mockups only tell a small part of its story. I asked myself […]
