Whitney Hurst sews a line of deceptively simple rag quilts. Why deceptive?
Because sure, you can sew together a bunch of fabric squares and trim them with ultrasoft minky, but really. Can you also put together a set of color combinations and patterns in such a surprising and delightful way?
Custom Window Seat Cushion: Carrie’s Kitchen
This was a fun custom fabric project, tweaking the colors of my Pointillist Stripes pattern for a kitchen window seat cushion.
In my ongoing quest to help crafters, sewists, quilters and others make the most of the tremendous selection of designs available from online fabric stores like Spoonflower, I came across a super-helpful FAQ by Sarah Walden, a.k.a. Peacoquette Designs.
With her permission, I […]
Digital fabric printing is growing and fabric buyers have more options and choices than ever. New services are popping up all over the world. In the U.S., for now, Spoonflower is the most popular retail source. They print on a wide range of high quality fabrics, and recently added wallpaper, wall decals and paper gift wrap.
New patterns releasing for sale next week (4/23/13)
Look for new patterns and pattern colorways, scheduled for release about April 23. They’ll be available as fabric, wallpaper, wall decals, and giftwrap, too.
At last, the concertina book (or accordion book) tutorial folks have been asking for! Keep in mind there are much more intensive and exacting ways to make these little books (for example, with acid free materials and reinforced corners); This is meant to be a quick, fun and inexpensive little project.
Pattern Design, Camouflage Fabric and Freedom
These fabric patterns were originally inspired by a Spoonflower camouflage design challenge, but have continued to evolve. I was looking for a way to express the feeling of freedom in a way that explores some alternate paths we take to create it.
The original pattern was a bit simpler. I like […]
New Fabric Patterns: Pastel Stripes, Sorta
I just got a bunch of swatches from Spoonflower (on premium quilting weight cotton), many of them exploring stripes. A few of them continue this lavender-plus-mint pastel theme I originally tested with a series of Mini Argyles. Today’s photo session began a […]
Fabric-covered Concertina Books
At a Craft & Folk Art Museum CRAFTlab Workshop this weekend, I got to try out some of my fabric patterns on these little accordion (or concertina, because it sounds fancy) books. Printed at half scale, the patterns looked really good on these little books (the square book […]
New Fabric Designs: Heartwings
Here are three of the palette experiments I’ve been doing with my Heartwings pattern. It was originally inspired by a camouflage design contest on the Spoonflower website, but has long since sparked intriguing color ideas.
Photos are of samples on quilting weight cotton. Available on fabrics from upholstery weight twill […]
Cooperative Projects: Wake a Sleeping Dragon
Bringing ideas to life is now my #2 high.
Helping others feel that feeling has become #1.
With my most recent volunteer creative project, I’d say a close third is learning that the project giftee has reaped profound meaning and sustenance from the gift (which happened, and it was heart-melting). However, keeping in mind […]
New Fabric Designs: Love Chain
I keep coming back to this simple concept, with more ideas for color and stripe widths. It’s turned out to be super popular.
Photos are of samples on quilting weight cotton. Order these patterns on fabrics from upholstery weight twill to super light cotton voile, at Spoonflower.
New Fabrics Available: More Tiny Argyles
Having photographed these on a black backdrop, I am reminded how much I love the black and lavender combo, which I did explore some last summer. I show off those in a previous post. To purchase (or just to see how they display on Spoonflower), click on […]
Fabric Design Online: Marketing Lessons from a Few Outstanding Independents
Creating and selling surface design work online is a side project I’ve been exploring since last summer. Can it become a viable business?
It depends.
There are a number of sites now that allow you to sell your fabric designs and receive a small commission. They are:
Spoonflower (US based, international shipping) […]
