In 2020, I was inspired to combine some of my pattern, writing, and textile projects into blended works.
Gems fabric in the dining room
Recently, I received an email asking about Haiku in a Prism, one of the Gems pattern colorways I offer on Spoonflower (a digital fabric printing website).
New Pattern: Baby Tears
I’m pretty happy with the final results of this pattern study. As simple as it appears, it seems to have endless color possibilities, and better: it has one or two satisfying quirks that elevate it beyond mere “floral”.
I’ve seen my design work on posters, websites, billboards and buses, and I’ve seen my chrysanthemums on wallpaper, clutch purses and duvet covers. Nothing beats seeing them on Holly.
I made myself get over to an event at LACMA back in January of this year, and am so glad I did. Korean-born artist Youngmin Lee gave a demonstration of bojagi making, and brought with her a glittering lode of stunning samples […]
Fabric Pattern: Wings for a Sphinx
Lisa Flores sews practical items for people and pets. She has an etsy shop, ekeka, where she sells custom and made-to-order cat beds, custom dog bed covers and cat clothes. Her cat clothes are mainly for hairless sphynx cats.
Pattern collection for home goods: Still Winter Woods
This pattern collection is inspired by the intriguing beauty of the colors in a snowflake pattern I created last winter. The coordinated set is now available for purchase on Spoonflower and continues to tell the story of a still and quiet winter wood. The palette is simple (and was developed spontaneously). Maybe that’s why it works so well across so many uses.
New patterns releasing for sale next week (4/23/13)
Look for new patterns and pattern colorways, scheduled for release about April 23. They’ll be available as fabric, wallpaper, wall decals, and giftwrap, too.
This Fabric has a Story • This Story has a Fabric
I’ve been looking for ways add dimension to this pattern design, which I showcased in a previous post. It’s the kind of design that really needs to be lived with and considered over time. Tiny photo mockups only tell a small part of its story. I asked myself […]
Book Review: A Field Guide to Fabric Design
As a longtime designer for many media, I’m among the kajillions who took one look at the idea of fabric printing on demand (thanks to Spoonflower) and went wild. Here was a way to quickly flesh out and share fabric pattern ideas. I was in heaven.
Very quickly after that, I […]
Heartwings Laptop/iPad Sleeve
This laptop sleeve is available in all sizes, and a few different color combos, too. A customer just sent me this photo of hers, fresh out of the delivery package.
I designed it using the crazy-easy, dangerously […]
Pattern Design, Camouflage Fabric and Freedom
These fabric patterns were originally inspired by a Spoonflower camouflage design challenge, but have continued to evolve. I was looking for a way to express the feeling of freedom in a way that explores some alternate paths we take to create it.
The original pattern was a bit simpler. I like […]
New Fabric Patterns: Pastel Stripes, Sorta
I just got a bunch of swatches from Spoonflower (on premium quilting weight cotton), many of them exploring stripes. A few of them continue this lavender-plus-mint pastel theme I originally tested with a series of Mini Argyles. Today’s photo session began a […]
Fabric-covered Concertina Books
At a Craft & Folk Art Museum CRAFTlab Workshop this weekend, I got to try out some of my fabric patterns on these little accordion (or concertina, because it sounds fancy) books. Printed at half scale, the patterns looked really good on these little books (the square book […]
