Imaginary Letter, photo by Jane M Sawyer

Dear Ms. Finger,

I received your email the other day, and I wanted to send you a personal reply.

So you know, I’ve gotten a few letters on this topic, so I’m sending this same reply to a number of people. To be honest, I had not realized how important this issue was to some of my constituents, so I’m thankful you brought it to my attention.

I have not been at the forefront of this issue, I have not led any legislation or debate that relates to it, nor have I really done sufficient research when I voted on issues like this in the past. In fact, there were a few times I vigorously opposed it.

Now that you and others have brought it to my attention, I’ve taken the time to learn more about it. At the end of this email you’ll see further questions I have about the issue. If you have some time, would you be willing to reply to me with your answers to some or all of them? This will help me to better understand how this affects you and your world. There is a chance I may remain opposed to your view after learning more about the issue, but with respectful and open dialogue, I’m hopeful we can find some middle ground.

I want you to know that some of this may be out of my jurisdiction. However, I will bring it to the attention of those who are in a position to act. I’m not going to promise that they will act, but I do assure you I’ll report back with real answers. That way, you’ll have a better idea how to proceed, should you desire to do so.

Committed to Serve,
Your Government Representative
